Description

Searchlight, Nevada: Panoramic Photograph. 13.25" x 4" on paperboard measuring 14" x 7". A very early view of the mining camp of Searchlight located just south of Las Vegas. Veteran prospector G. F. Colton discovered an exposed gold vein in 1897. The Quartette mine became the most important in the district. In this early view, the camp is still sparsely populated. In 1904 the local newspaper called booming, wild Searchlight "the camp without a failure." Many prominent Las Vegans got their start here.
