Description

Robert E. Lee: War-Time From-Life "Blockade" Portrait by Julian Vannerson. This well-known photograph of Lee is very rare in its "from-life" large format presentation and virtually unknown bearing the war-time imprint "Photographed by J. Vannerson, 77 Main St., Richmond, Va." as found here. Made at the behest of sculptor Edward Valentine to be used as a model for a work to be sold in England for the benefit of Confederate prisoners-of-war. 5.25" x 7.25" albumen affixed to a thin 7.5" x 10" mount (trimmed to an oval, but originally rectangular in shape). Some loss and discoloration to the mount with Scotch and paper tape repairs on verso, with no bleed-through. There is a crease across the bottom third of the image, but no tears or missing emulsion. Could be a centerpiece of any collection of Confederate war-time photography due to its rarity.
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.
