Description

Robert E. Lee: Large Mounted Albumen of Lee on Traveller. 11" x 9.5" albumen affixed to a 17" x 14" mount depicting Lee on his favorite war-horse. Taken in the summer of 1866 by A. H. Plecker, assisted by Michael Miley, at Rockbridge Baths near Lexington, Virginia. Blind-stamp of M. Miley in the lower left corner. Two presentation inscriptions on verso dated 1890 and 1959, the first inscribed to Mrs. George Hearst, indicating that this impression was made from the original negative still in possession "of the photographer at Lexington". Light wear and soiling to mount with one nail-hole at top. A popular image, common in smaller format, but originals from Miley's studio in this large format are indeed rare. The albumen itself is in great shape.
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.
