Description
Robert E. Lee: Large Format From-Life "Back Door" Portrait by Brady. One of six photographs taken of Robert E. Lee immediately after the Surrender at Appomattox. This is the rarest of the six in any format because the original negative was apparently lost or broken soon after the photograph was taken. 6" x 8" albumen affixed to the original 10" x 12" photographer's mount with Brady credit. The photograph itself is extremely sharp and clean with no damage whatsoever. The original mount has a series of slits around the periphery so that it could be fitted into a dome-shaped oval frame. A couple of sections of the mount are missing and there is evidence of glue over Brady's imprint and near the top center. Toning or mat burn to the border. None of this affects the image. 5-cent revenue stamp on verso along with pencil inscription related to the original owner, a Virginia resident.From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.
