Description

James B. "Wild Bill" Hickok: A Stunning Original Cabinet Photo in Virtually Mint Condition. On the mount of Rockwood Studios, New York, this image was almost certainly taken in 1873, when Hickok was living in the city and co-starring with "Buffalo Bill" Cody in the legendary stage play "Scouts of the Plains" (Hickok lived up to his reputation there, as his fiery temperament and unrestrained conduct made him a poor fit for such a production; he lasted only seven months in the play). This is an iconic image of Hickok, and this spectacular first-generation copy might well be the finest known example. Contrast and sharpness of the photo are unimprovable, and it shows nary a hint of fading. Even the mount is essentially mint save for trivial wear at the lower left hand corner.
This copy was originally sold by Swann's in a mid-1990s auction, where it fetched $21,650. Consigned to Heritage by the original Swann's buyer in 2011, it resold for $17,925. The only other auction we could find was a 2004 Ohio auction, where that copy sold for $34,500. The cabinet card has been elegantly custom-framed to a size of 10.5" x 12.5". A very special opportunity for one who aspires to own the "best of the best" in Old West photography.
