Description

Street scene with sixteen identified buildings.

Dodge City, Kansas: Rare and Early Cabinet Card, a Street Scene of the Legendary Wild West Frontier Town, Circa 1875. A 5.5" x 4" image on a 6.5" x 4.25" mount picturing a row of buildings on a street facing a set of railroad tracks. Sixteen buildings are numbered and two cross streets are identified with tiny handwritten numbers and symbols. They correspond with information written on the verso. Four of the group are saloons- not too surprising based on the reputation of the town. Five are listed as "Genl Mdse" establishments including building number six which was Charles Rath's & Co. Rath was a legendary frontier trader, merchant, and buffalo-hide buyer, present from the establishment of Dodge City. Listed at number sixteen is the Dodge City Hotel. We also note several men standing in front of various buildings and a stagecoach in front of building number ten. Very good condition with light toning, a bump on the bottom left corner, and some staining. No detail is obscured and some of the signs can be observed. Due to the period identification on the reverse, a historical item such as this should be prized in any collection of Dodge City, Kansas, or "wild west" items.
