Description

"Wild Bill" Hickok: A Rarely-offered Cabinet Photo. On verso is a wonderfully colorful description by a witness to an exhibition of Hickok's marksmanship:
"Wild Bills marksmanship a little exhibition of skill while riding along a street in Topeka. Wore old blue army coat at the hips 2 big bunches where his 6 shooters hung. Brown Mare Nell tied to hitching post in front of store. He untied here[sic]-mounted-round down street-swing in saddle, pulled gun. Shot at sign of grocery store & holes in letter O in sign. Edward Smith."
Photo and mount have light overall soiling and would undoubtedly benefit from cleaning by a qualified photo conservator, but the cabinet card is very displayable in its present state. Large area of paper loss on upper verso from old album mounting.
While not the finest condition Hickok photo we have handled, the evocative account on the back certainly makes it one of the most appealing and significant. This example was sold by Swann's in 1997 for $21,850. Standard 4.25" x 6.5" cabinet photo size.
