[George A. Custer]: Group of Lt. Col. Herbert Jermain Slocum Photographs. Eclectic group of photos, etc. related to Lt. Colonel Herbert Slocum who joined the 7th Cavalry in 1876, just barely avoiding the Little Big Horn massacre, and continued to serve during the Indian Wars through the Philippine Insurrection. 1) 1862 carte-de-visite of Captain Joseph Slocum in his Union uniform. 2) 1874 cabinet card of H. J. Slocum with G. W. Pach back mark, signed by Cadet Slocum on verso (scattered ink stains). 3) A second cabinet card of Cadet Slocum with Pach back mark. 4) A cabinet card by Zimmerman of St. Paul, inscribed on verso by Slocum "2 Lieut. H. J. Slocum 7th Cavy 1876" (light soiling, holed at top). 5) Cabinet card of Slocum as a West Point cadet in 1876. Ludovici of New York credit and back mark. 6) Small cabinet card of Slocum by the Rio Grande River, signed and inscribed by him on the verso "In front of my tent on the Rio Grande River near Laredo, Texas during the Garza Campaign 1894-5. Watching Mexico! H. J. Slocum". 7) through 12) Four real photo postcards of Slocum from the punitive expedition against Pancho Villa in Columbus, N.M. in 1916 (three with notations by him). 13) Standing photo of Slocum at Columbus, N.M. 14) 1915 silver print of Slocum in uniform (trimmed at bottom). 15) 1926 silver print of a painting of Slocum (trimmed at bottom). 16) 9" x 7" photo of Slocum and other military personnel taken June 25th 1886 at Fort Custer, Montana. Barry blind-stamp, housed in Barry Studio folder with notations by Slocum. 17) Slocum's personal calling card.
