Description
William McKinley Assassination: Typed Telegram on Executive Mansion Stationery issued at 3:20 am on September 8, 1901 by George Cortelyou from Buffalo two days after the President was shot. The telegram measures 8" x 5.2", and states: "The following bulletin was issued by the President's physicians at 3:20 a.m. The President has passed a fairly good night. Pulse 122, temperature 102.4 degrees, respiration 24." The telegram is marked "Copy" in type at top left. Gently toned, with mailing folds, otherwise near fine. The telegram is accompanied by two additional carbons of reports issued later the same day. The next telegram is issued at 12:15 pm, and reports on the President's condition as improving: "The improvement in the President's condition has continued since last bulletin. Pulse 128, temperature 101 degrees, respiration 27. / P.M. Rixey. / Dr. McBurney is here now and will meet the President;s physicians in consultation at three o'clock." Signed in type by George Cortelyou. This telegram us accompanied by the original Executive Mansion transmittal envelope addressed to Mr. Henry Mathews in Washington D.C. The third and final telegram in this group is a carbon copy of the report issued at 4 pm by the President's medical team: "The President since the last bulletin has slept quietly, four hours altogether since 9 o'clock. His condition is satisfactory to all the physicians present." Signed in type by all attending doctors. Both carbons are on thin, carbon paper prone to creasing. With toning, but intact and very legible.William McKinley was shot on September 6, 1901 inside the Temple of Music at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo by Leon Czolgosz. Although McKinley appeared to be recovering from his wounds initially, as these bulletins report, his condition took a marked turn for the worst on September 12th. McKinley would succumb to his wounds on September 14, 1901.
