Description

Washington, George. Revolutionary war-date letter signed ("G. Washington") Washington, George. Revolutionary war-date letter signed ("G. Washington") 1 page handwritten (7 ¼ x 11 ½ in.; 184 x 292 mm.) "Head-Quarters, New York," 6 September 1776. Tipped to an archival, reinforcement leaf for preservation, the letter exhibits minor fading and faint creases from original folds. The content is clean and bold with Washington's strong signature. Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army addresses the President of the Committee of Safety of the State of New York regarding militia. Washington writes in full: "SIR: I have now before me your letter of the 4th instant, enclosing the report against ordering out any more of the Militia from the Counties of Orange, Dutchess, Westchester, or Ulster. The reasons alleged by the Committee to whom this matter was referred, are entirely satisfactory to me, and therefore I do not expect a compliance with that part of my letter which respects this matter. I have the honour to be your most obedient servant, G. WASHINGTON To the Hon. Abraham Yates, Jun., Esq., President of the Committee of Safety of the State of New- York" Written at the peak of the American Revolutionary war, by the Commander-in-chief for the Continental army just a few short months after Congress declared independence as a new nation in July 1776, when Thomas Jefferson wrote and the states unanimously ratified the United States Declaration of Independence.
