Description

Wallpaper Newspaper: The Southern Sentinel. Vol. 1, No. 10, one page, 17.75" x 25.5", Alexandria [Louisiana], June 13, 1863. Printed on recto of white/green/brown wallpaper as a result of a paper shortage throughout the South. There are no auction records for this edition.

Published the month after the Battles of Chancellorsville and the Wilderness, it features a piece on the loss of Gen. Jackson: "Soon after nine o'clock at night, Gen. Jackson received the wounds which caused his death, and about the same time Gen. A. P. Hill...was also disabled." Lieutenant General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson (1824-1863) was wounded by friendly fire during the Battle of Chancellorsville and lost his left arm as a result. Unfortunately, he contracted pneumonia and died eight days later.

Fold creases are weak with some minor paper loss and tearing; some of the text is obscured. Edges are chipped; tear in the top margin along the vertical crease. On the verso is an attached note, possibly to repair a tear, on which is partially inscribed, in ink; writing is illegible.
