Description
TWO DEMPSEY PROGRAMS. With captivating sub-plots, we present these two boxing programs – both featuring the Manassa Mauler. The first of these was held on July 4, 1923 in, of all places, Shelby, Montana. It was hoped that this title fight would put a frontier community on the map. The challenger was a capable Tommy Gibbons who went the distance, lost in a decision, and never collected a dime because of the failed gate receipts. This program is extremely fragile with a moderate vertical crease (60%). But, attending this program is the corresponding ticket to the bout (EX+). Four years later, an optimistic Jack Sharkey challenged Dempsey. This brawl convened in Yankee Stadium on July 21, 1927. By the 7th round, Dempsey had fired a few shots below the belt. Sharkey turned to protest to the referee, whereupon Dempsey launched a knockout blow to the jaw. This was a famous and controversial fight, but not for the title. The pertinent program for the contest is provided here as well. It has a moderate/ heavy crease with mild border damage, rendering it about VG.
