Description
Texas Ranger Captain Frank A. Hamer's Warrant of Authority. Single printed page, 8.5" x 11", with typed engrossment issued to Francis Augustus Hamer, and dated January 1, 1949. Hamer's age is listed as 64; his height, 6' 3", and weight, 225 lbs. In part: "This is to certify that the bearer Francis Augustus Hamer is a Special Ranger in the Ranger Division, Department of Public Safety, State of Texas, and this is his Warrant of Authority as a Special Ranger under an Act of the 44th Legislature of the State of Texas, Approved May 8th, 1935, and Descriptive List for identification, and will be exhibited as his authority to Act as a Special Ranger when called upon his credentials..."In the 19th Century, Rangers were issued descriptive lists such as this in lieu of badges. Hamer had just retired (in 1949), and this Descriptive List was likely issued for a special assignment. Blind embossed seal of the State of Texas at lower left.
Condition: With moderate wear and creasing, and bits of paper loss at the folds. This type of wear would be commensurate with a document that Hamer carried with him at times of service for use as identification. Light scattered foxing on verso.
