Description

Sibelius, Jean. Typed letter signed, in English, 2 pages (7.87 x 6.37 in.; 200 x 162 mm.), Järvenpää, 26 July 1937, to Miss Viola Wasterlain; with transmittal envelope. Sibelius mentions Heifetz and keeps his current musical project a secret. The Finnish composer writes in full: Dear Miss Wasterlain, I thank you very much for your letter and I wish to tell you how much honoured I feel about the success my music has created in America. I am glad to hear that you are going to perform my D-minor Violin Concerto, and I prefer that you play it exactly as I have written it, because the changes made by Heifetz are his own doing. I am sorry I cannot answer your question about my present work, as I stick to the rule not to tell anybody about my work before it is finished. Please convey my very best regards to my old friend Basil Cameron. Wishing you every luck with your performances, I am, Yours sincerely, Jean Sibelius Sibelius mentions his best-known composition in his letter to a young performer. Hints of Tchaikovsky's music are particularly evident in Sibelius' Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47 (1903/1905). Similarities to Bruckner are most strongly felt in the unmixed timbral palette and somber brass chorales of Sibelius' orchestration, a fondness for pedal points, and in the underlying slow pace of the music. Together with: A postcard photograph inscribed and signed, (5.37 x 3.5 in.; 137 x 89 mm.). A photograph signed, (5.75 x 4.12 in.; 146 x 105 mm.); mounted on cardstock. Both images were made from the same negative.
