Republic of Texas Treasury Warrants (2) with Texian Navy $25 Printed Note. Includes:Treasury Warrant Issued to John J. H. Grammont. One partially printed page, 6 1/4 x 3 1/2 inches, Washington, Texas; February 1, 1844. Certificate "No. 1336" for $48, issued to John J. H. Grammont for "Pay as Member of the House of Representatives." Signed by James B. Shaw as Comptroller and Charles Mason as Auditor. Endorsed by Grammont on the verso. Grammont, a French surveyor, arrived in Texas between March 1836 and October 1837. He went on to serve as county surveyor for Victoria County from 1839 to 1842, and in January 1843 was elected mayor of Victoria. Later that year, he represented the county in the Eighth Congress of the Republic of Texas (1843-44).
Treasury Warrant Issued to Jim Shaw, a Delaware Indian Scout. One partially printed page, 7 x 3 1/2 inches, [Austin, Texas]; February 1, 1845. Certificate "No. 2354" for $85, issued to "Jim Shaw, W H Bourland, atty" for "Services rendered to the Indian Bureau." Signed by James B. Shaw as Comptroller and Charles Mason as Auditor. Endorsed by Bourland on the verso. Jim Shaw, a Delaware Indian, served the Republic of Texas as a frontier scout, interpreter, and diplomat. In 1843, Sam Houston enlisted him to help advance his Indian peace policy, and Shaw continued working in the Indian service until 1858. During that time, he negotiated with Native groups, guided settlers, and advised Texan leaders on Indian affairs.
Appropriation Bond for the Texian Navy. One partially printed page, 7 1/4 x 3 inches, Austin, Texas; April 23, 1841. A bond, "No. 836," authorizing a payment of $25 "to satisfy the claims of the Officers, Sailors, and Marines of the Texian Navy." Signed by James B. Shaw as Comptroller and J. W. Simmons as Treasurer. Endorsed by "James Mayor / Ships Cook," on the verso.
Condition: Each lightly toned with minor edgewear; a few very light stains. Treasury warrants marked "Paid" in ink through the center.
