RARE EARLY CLEVELAND TEAM CELLULOID BASEBALL TOYS. Remarkable set of hollow celluloid dolls in cloth uniforms with accessories. Consists of: 1) Eight players (1 presumably missing) 2) Umpire 3) Paper flag on painted wood base and pole 4) Wood mini bat 5) Satin covered bases 6) Hollow celluloid baseball Style of the dolls themselves definitely dates them to a very early period, 1890’s or very early 1900’s! According to the uniform expert, Dan Knoll, that dating would be consistent with the uniform style. Condition is amazingly good considering the nature of the items. There is non of the usual denting or flattening or cracking associated with celluloid toys and ornaments of this era. In addition, the cloth uniforms are in an exceptional state of preservation, free of soiling or the moth holes one might expect in the fabric. Only the paper flag seems to have deteriorated and appears to have been pieced together years ago and glued onto a stiffened backing. It now seems quite stable. WE seem to recall having a single player of this type (perhaps the missing 9th one, separated long ago?) in one of our auctions in the mid- 1990s. But we have never seen a grouping like this, nor had several hobby "old hands" whom we consulted. Great early item! Each doll is 6 ¼" and the flag is 13" tall.
