Description

Peachey Expedition Journal. Sixty pages, 5 x 7 ¼ inches, [Canada]; 1789 - 1790. Journal written by a member of the 1790 Peachey Expedition throughout the Great Lakes region. Entries include details about the weather, scenery, local flora and fauna, and the area's indigenous tribes. It also includes a ledger of payments and expenses, astrological calculations, and a hand-drawn map.

An entry dated "15th Sunday" reads, in part, "Went in quest of a cave said to be on the North side of the little Lake, and of a surprising nature, we took an Indian for our guide but after walking about 16 miles from the Lake we returned to our Boat at Dark without being gratified in our expectations."

Another entry dated "25th Friday," clearly written on December 25, records the surveyor location on Christmas. It reads, in part, "Christmas remained at Geneva at Jimmy's Tavern from this place to the M.S. line is one mile 1/4 & 30 perches West, & 14 miles more to Canandagua [Canandaigua]..."

The Peachey expedition, led by Deputy Provincial Surveyor James Peachey, aimed to update previous surveys executed along what is now the U.S. - Canadian border. The 1789-1790 expedition was just one of several excursions led by Peachey throughout the 1780s and 1790s.
