Description
Wallpaper Newspaper:The Weekly Junior Register. Vol. 2, No. 17, two pages, 22" x 19.5", Franklin [Louisiana], May 2, 1863. Printed on the recto of white/yellow floral wallpaper due to a paper shortage throughout the South. Two notes above the title read, "W. M. Robinson Era Office," and, "on wallpaper." Published during the occupation of Franklin by Federal troops after the Battle of Irish Bend two weeks prior. The paper contains news of the war and from the North, as well as happenings in the South, often in a humorous and sarcastic manner. One such article titled "Starling Rumors" contains the following information:"There are rumors afloat on the 'shells,' among Confederate sympathizers, from re-lie-able sources, that Baton Rouge has been captured by the gorilla [sic] Gardner; that forty thousand secessionists had crossed the Mississippi river - on saw-logs or pine shingles, no doubt - and were marching on Berwick's Bay..."
The paper is torn in two along the horizontal crease obscuring some of the text. There is bleed-through from the wallpaper ink; edges are folded and chipped. Only a few of these copies have been seen in the last ten years, but none of this particular edition.
