Description

Two Issues of La Opinion; Periodico Oficial del Gobierno Superior del Departamento de San Luis Potosi. Issues 142 and 144, dated July 8 and 15, 1836. San Luis Potosi: Imprenta del Gobierno a cargo de J. Maria Infante. Each is four pages and approximately 8 5/8 x 12 1/2 inches.

The July 15 issue contains several mentions of the recent war with Texas. The second column under the heading "Capitulo Unodecimo" (Chapter Eleven) reprints a proposal being considered initially promulgated on June 7, 1836 that an anniversary honoring the military unit that fought at the Alamo: [English translation] "Considering that the Texas campaign opened with the glorious taking by assault of the Alamo, it is indicated to celebrate the anniversary of the creation of the military unit the sixth day of March on which it occurred, with great honor of the Mexican armed forces..." Page two includes two responses to articles published in American newspapers: The first (column one) is an angry response to several articles published in the New Orleans Bee including one which claimed that the Mexican Army abandoned Santa Anna letting him "fall to the adventurers from Texas." In the fourth column, they suggest a worthy article in the Louisiana Advertiser authored by an "impartial pen from the United States" who analyzes the injustice in the taking of Texas by foreigners. Although we were able to confirm that the Bee was in publication in 1836, we could not verify the Advertiser was still in circulation.

The July 8 issue reprints two decrees regarding large loans to be authorized by Congress for the purpose of supplementing the decrease in national income. The decree approves a loan of up to two million pesos. The poor financial state of the country is no doubt the result of the ongoing campaigns in Texas.

Condition: Both papers have light offsetting and flattened folds. Pencil markings on both issues denoting articles with content pertaining to Texas.
