The Pittsburgh Courier was an African-American newspaper that ran from 1907 to 1966. It was founded by Edwin Nathaniel Harleston, who worked at the H.J. Heinz Company in Pittsburgh. What began as a two-page newspaper, of which Harleston printed approximately ten copies, soon grew into a larger paper after Edward Penman, Hepburn Carter, Scott Wood Jr., and Harvey Tanner joined the newspaper. Its length was doubled, and the newly named Pittsburgh Courier sold around 500 copies. By the 1950s, the Courier was circulating between 250,000-357,000 copies. The comic strips that the newspaper published were started in the late 1920s, beginning with Sunny Boy Sam (launched in 1928). From 1950-1954 the newspaper collaborated with Smith-Mann Syndicate to produce a weekly comic section in color, which was named Carousel. After the weekly section ended in 1954, the comics returned to daily black and white strips.
Condition: Toned throughout. Paper is slightly brittle, with chipping and small tears at edges and corners. Colors remain bright.
