Description

The Boston Evening - Post: Boston Massacre. 10" x 15", 4pg. newspaper and its single sheet supplement, July 23, 1770. The newspaper contains a front page ad for a book titled: "Just Published...A narrative of the late horrid Massacre in Boston (bottom of 3rd column), perpetrated on the evening of the 5th of March 1770 by soldiers of the 29th regiment.." (The Boston Massacre). It also contains reference to The Boston Massacre on the font page of the Supplement. This issue and its supplement also contains much news of the reaction in the American Colonies against Great Britain, including the British tax on tea and the boycotting of British imports by the Americans in response to the British taxes. Reactions to the Boston Massacre were explosive, with Patriots using it as powerful propaganda to fuel anti-British sentiment, portraying it as a brutal slaughter, while Loyalists argued self-defense; the event intensified colonial outrage, led to the removal of British troops from Boston, and became a rallying cry, solidifying the foundation for the American Revolution despite John Adams' successful defense of the soldiers in court.
