Many of the news stories contain early assumptions about President Lincoln's assassins, including assumptions about the whereabouts of John Wilkes Booth, who was killed during his attempted capture on April 26. The newspapers also include interesting content on the early days of the Civil War, including the shocking news of one of the first casualties of the war.

The issues included in this lot:

New York Times. May 25, 1861. With news of the "assassination" on May 24^th of Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth, who is considered the first casualty of the Civil War. Ellsworth was close to Lincoln's family and had studied law in Lincoln's office in Springfield, Illinois, before coming to Washington, D.C., with the First Family after Lincoln's presidential election. Light dampstaining with somewhat ragged edges.

New York Weekly Times. April 22, 1865. Toned.

New York Weekly Times. April 29, 1865. Contains a reprint of the famous John Wilkes Booth letter which he had given to his sister in January 1865. The letter, originally published in the April 21, 1865, issue of the New York Times, is reprinted in full. The article is subtitled, "Extraordinary Letter of John Wilkes Booth--Proof that He Meditated His Crime Months Ag0--His Excuses for the Contemplated Act--His Participation in the Execution of John Brown."
