Description
Gazette of the United States (Philadelphia, Pa.): Early Numismatics - 1792 Act for the Minting of Copper Coins, May 30, 1792, 4 pgs., 10 1/2" x 16 3/4". The issue contains a front page printing of "AN ACT to provide for Copper Coinage", passed by the US Congress and signed in type by President GEORGE WASHINGTON. This Act marks the beginning of the minting of cents and half-cents by the US Government and would be an attractive display item for a serious collector of early US copper coins. This Act authorized the U.S. Mint to engrave and issue copper coins. It followed the precedent set by the Fugio cent of 1787 and formally established the copper cent, the precursor to today's one-cent coin. It stipulated that the Director of the Mint was authorized to buy a quantity of copper, not to exceed 150 tons, for coining cents and half-cents. The Act declared that only the cents and half-cents minted under this law would be recognized as legal tender and allowed to circulate as money.Condition: Disbound, minor edge wear. Else fine.
