This issue of Frederick Douglass' newspaper, Vol. XII - No. 38, includes such articles as "On the Fourteenth Query of Thomas Jefferson's Notes on Virginia", "Speech of Geo. T. Frederick Douglass (1817-1895), the great black American reformer who was born a slave, would become instrumental in creating the black regiments that fought with distinction during the Civil War. As a close Abraham Lincoln adviser, he persuaded the President to have the Union arm blacks. Douglass was already a notable preacher, abolitionist, and editor before the Civil War began. He published his paper The North Star in 1847, but changed the title to Frederick Douglass' Paper in June 1851 when it merged with Gerrit Smith's Liberty Party Paper. Douglass acted as Editor with John Thomas as Corresponding Editor. The paper covered not only the topic of racial discrimination, slavery, and the need for the education of African Americans, but it also advocated for women's rights. Douglass had multiple contributors including Charles Dickens, who had excerpts from his novel Bleak House published in the paper. The paper was published up until the end of 1859.
