Description
[Woman's Suffrage] Victoria Woodhull and Belva Lockwood Papers. No history of the woman suffrage movement in the United States would be complete without a discussion of Victoria Woodhull, the first female candidate for President. In 1870, she started a newspaper with her sister, Tennessee Celeste Claflin (also known as Tennie C.), called Woodhull and Claflin's Weekly. Lasting for six years, it became known for its radical views on free love, labor, and the rights of women. It printed the first English version of Karl Marx's Communist manifesto and it exposed the adulterous affair of Henry Ward Beecher with the wife of his close friend, Theodore Tilton. Woodhull was nominated for President in 1872 by the Equal Rights Party, and Frederick Douglass was chosen as her running mate. Douglass never acknowledged the nomination for reasons that he did not publicly declare. This lot features a 16 page, 11.75" x 16.5" copy of the WoodHull and Claflin's Weekly, Vol. 2, No. 11, Whole No. 37, from New York, January 28, 1871. A front-page advertisement for Victoria C. Woodhull is prominently placed and utilizes attractive fonts. Tape appears throughout the pages, with pages seven and eight sticking together at the center of the left edge. Multiple small tears and minor loss are present at the left and right edges. Toning and light staining can be seen throughout, and handwritten inscriptions in pencil are at the top and bottom edges. Also offered in this sale is an 8pp., 13" x 18.125" copy of the National Equal Rights, Vol. III, No. 11, from San Francisco, California, November 1884. A portrait of Belva A. Lockwood appears under the title "Woman's Presidential Campaign" and above the text "Platform of the National Equal Rights Party." Folds are present and the right edge of the first page has chipping and tearing. A brown accretion is near the right edge on the front page. Light toning throughout and evidence of old tape can be seen at the top edge of the back. Overall, these are in nice condition and would display quite well together. No minimum bid.
