Description

[Thomas Jefferson]. The Democrat. Boston; Saturday, March 16, 1805. True & Parks. Volume II [2], number 22. Four pages, 19" x 12". Unpaginated and printed in four columns (front page printed in two). Headed decoratively in black type, the entire front page of this issue records Jefferson's second Inaugural address in two wide columns. Fresh off his first term, sweeping out the Federalists and establishing the Democratic-Republic party of the time, Jefferson opened his second term in office with this affiliation renewed. His chosen words document the acquisition of Louisiana, the need for a free press, freedom of religion, financial developments and more, particularly highlighting his wishes for peace, fellowship, and shared spirits between a government and the people.

Condition: Rough edges. Several open tears and chipping to edges just affecting text. Front page split horizontally along old fold; narrow open tear affecting text across the top nine lines of column two on the front page. Dampstained; scattered soiling. Somewhat rubbed, affecting legibility across the top right corner of the front page.
