Description

[Texas Revolution]. Issue of The New Yorker with News on the Texas Revolution. New York: H. Greeley & Co., November 19, 1836. Vol. II, No. 9. Fourteen pages, 10 1/4 x 13 inches. Paginated and printed in three columns, pp. 129-144. This issue features an excerpt from a letter commenting on the Texas Revolution, printed on page 139 in the second and third columns. The excerpt reads:

"You would be surprised at the utter apathy with which the question of Texas is beheld here, and I really think there is no one who is their enemy more than I am. Filisola, in his defence, published a short time back, shows completely the cause of the failure. The Mexican army consisted of recruits forced in a great measure from San Luis on the march, and when they arrived at the seat of war, Santa Ana, to put the commissariat money in his pocket, kept the troops on half rations-will it be believed that he was such a scoundrelly wretch! They were almost naked, and had to endure the severities of the rainy season, thus miserably provided. He deserves to have his throat cut. As to the word Texian, it is a lie (there are not 500 in the State,) like their pretended rights. They are American interlopers, who wish to possess the state."

In addition, the issue features brief reporting on Texas and Mexico, including a note on Manuel Eduardo de Gorostiza's diplomatic visit to the United States following the revolution, and a short report on Texian privateer Thomas Toby.

Condition: Lightly toned with minor edgewear. Remnants from previous binding at the left edge, including pinholes; pages beginning to separate at the hinge. Some foxing and staining throughout, largely confined to the first and final pages.
