Description
"The White Star line admitted there was practically no hope for the remaining 1492 of the ship's company of 2358 souls. That all would have had a chance of safety had there been lifeboats and rafts enough, was the general belief of navigators."
[RMS Titanic - Unsinkable Molly Brown].
Denver Express. Denver, Colorado; Tuesday, April 16,
1912. Vol. 6, number 306. [1]-8 pages, 17.5" x 21". Fascinating
early coverage about the sinking of the Titanic from the
Denver Express with specific mentions of Mrs. J. J. Brown,
best remembered by history as "The Unsinkable Molly Brown." The
front page features the bold headline "1492 Drown When Titanic
Sinks" with the subheading "Denver Woman is Safe". The
page includes a brief article titled "Denver Woman Rescued,"
which reports on the notable local casualties from the disaster
before discussing Molly Brown's rescue. It reads, in part: "Mrs.
J. J. Brown, the local society leader, was also aboard the Titanic.
Reports today show that she is among the women saved. She was
returning from a tour of Egypt." The majority of this page is
dedicated to articles on the sinking, including an estimated list
of casualties, speculation about the collision and sinking, the RMS
Carpathia's rescue, and a critique concerning the number of
lifeboats. Among these is an especially poignant section on the
lack of lifeboats. "The White Star line admitted there was
practically no hope for the remaining 1492 of the ship's company of
2358 souls. That all would have had a chance of safety had there
been lifeboats and rafts enough, was the general belief of
navigators. But the liner, newest and greatest of trans-Atlantic
ships, carried only twenty large, modern lifeboats, and they were
loaded to the gunwales with women and children, who, in accordance
with the unwritten law of the sea, had been put over the side
first..." The coverage continues onto page three.Condition: Gently toned with light edgewear. Three minor areas of tape repair to closed tears, none of which cross any text concerning the Titanic. Integral fold has been pricked for binding, not affecting text. Stray purple crayon mark to page seven. Crease beginning at the bottom edge affects some text on pages 1-3.
