Description
[Mexican Independence]. Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara Letter Printed in Niles' Weekly Register Supplement. [Baltimore: H. Niles]; October 2, 1813. Eight pages (pp. 81-88), 6 1/8 x 9 3/4 inches, printed in two columns. Gutierrez's letter declaring Texas's independence from Spain begins at the top of the second column on page 87. In part:"Don Jose Bernardo Gutieres, commander in chief of the Northern Mexican army, and governor of the new state of Texas, to the friends of the patriotic cause, and freemen of all nations: Friends of the Mexican cause!-The independence of Texas, a desideration long looked for and greatly wished by all nations except Great Britain and Spain in Europe, is at length accomplished. After a long and tedious warfare, I have happily succeeded to erect the standard of union and liberty in the capital of Texas! That sacred banner is venerated by the Mexican patriots, and feared by the enemies of human liberty."
On April 6, 1813, José Bernardo Gutiérrez de Lara declared Texas independent from Spain, appointing himself as the state's first president and issuing its first constitution. However, by the time this declaration appeared in Niles' Weekly Register, the fledgling republic had already fallen. On August 13 of that same year, José Joaquín de Arredondo led a force of Royalist troops that decisively defeated Gutiérrez's army, restoring Spanish control over Texas.
