Description
[Civil War]. The Courier Newspaper. Volume X, Number 108. Two pages, 11.75" x 19.25", Natchez [Mississippi], May 10, 1862. Printed two days before the surrender of the city to Federal forces, this edition contains a call "for 3,000 volunteers to fill up the Mississippi Reg'ts in Gen. Beauregard's army." There is also an article on the Confederate Congress' "recent act...authorizing the raising and bringing into service...bands of partisan rangers." Also includes many period advertisements. Three folds, else in very fine condition.More Information:
Of the Federals that will soon be at their door, the paper reports: "We have heard nothing positive as to the Federal gunboats, since they turned down the river...below Natchez. Along that coast, they were engaged in the unenviable business of robbing the hen-roosts belonging to the slaves - the comforts provided by masters for their faithful and industrious servants. Uncle Sam has verily fallen upon evil times, when he sends out such emmissaries [sic] to invade and subjugate the Southern people."
