Description

Samuel Augustus Mitchell. Map of Texas from the Most Recent Authorities. Philadelphia: S. A. Mitchell, [circa 1846]. 15 1/2 x 13 5/8 inches. Full-color map of Texas with inset map of "Texas North of the Red River" at the bottom left.

Originally published in Mitchell's Universal Atlas, this map depicts approximately fifty counties in Texas, as well as numerous early roads and place names, including Fort Alamo. It was among the first maps to be converted from engraved plates to lithographic plates, greatly reducing the cost of production and making it widely affordable to the American public.

Condition: Minor edgewear including a few very small chips at the top edge. Very lightly toned at the edges, with a touch of thumb soiling in the bottom margin.

Reference: Rumsey 537.036.
