Description
Samuel Augustus Mitchell. A New Map of Texas, Oregon and California with the Regions Adjoining. Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, 1846. First Edition. Map, 21 x 22 5/8 inches, folded into original black roan embossed folder, 3 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches. Title stamped in gilt on front cover. Bound in the same folder and preceding the map is Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map of Texas, Oregon, and California, with the Regions Adjoining. Accompaniment bound in plain blue wrappers, with front wrapper and front fly-leaf laid down on inner front cover. "Gold Region" in California highlighted in gold and stamped "GOLD REGION," not usually found so identified.Written on the eve of the Mexican-American War, this booklet was "Entered according to the Act of Congress in the year 1845 by H. N. Burroughs in the clerks office of the District Court of the eastern district of Pennsylvania." Fighting between the United States and Mexico did not begin until 1846, ending, in effect, on September 14, 1847 with Gen. Winfield Scott's occupation of Mexico City. Much of the territory depicted in this map was part of the United States by 1848.
Condition Report: Some rubbing and edgewear to original boards, rear hinge starting but holding, pale blue wrappers preserved. Light and uneven toning and scattered foxing to Accompaniment. Map creased along folds, minor paper losses at a few fold intersections, scattered soiling, some toning and oxidation to the original hand-color, affecting blue and green. Entirely unrestored.
