Colton, 1839.FIRST PRINTING. Hand-colored folding map, 24.25" x 32", on onion skin paper, engraved by Stiles, Sherman and Smith, pocket map folding into accompanying text, Guide to the Republic of Texas: Consisting of a Brief Outline of the History of its Settlement, A General View of the Surface of the Country; It's Climate, Soils, Productions... 12mo. Original blindstamped green cloth, title gilt-lettered on cover. Matted together with map unfolded and framed to an overall size of 37.5" x 49.5" in a handsome wooden gilt frame.
Map with inset at lower right, "Map of the Rio Grande and the Country West to the Pacific." Locations of the original Texas colonies and early county configurations are presented along with geographic features and locations of settlements and Indian groups.
According to Streeter: "The first general guide to Texas...It must have been a useful book for intending settlers, and its contemporary account of existing conditions makes it a valuable book now. The map is important.... It shows, probably for the first time, the newly laid out town of Austin on the north bank of the Colorado."
A handsome, promotional map that follows the model established by Stephen F. Austin.
Condition: Lightly toned, a bit darker along some folds, some very small closed tears at the folds along the top margin, a small portion of the right margin appears to be backed with tissue on verso. Small area (approximately 1" x 2") affecting a few words replaced in facsimile in San Patricio county at lower left. Also, a small area at top left replaced in facsimile. Not examined out of the frame.
