Description

Maps (2) of Australia. Includes:

J. & C. Walker. Western Australia, from the latest Documents received in the Colonial Office. London: J. Murray, 1832. 13 1/2 x 16 1/4 inches. One of the earliest printed maps featuring the Swan River Colony, established just three years before this map appeared in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society. The map extends from the area north of Perth to the south coast beyond Albany, depicting the routes of six explorers' expeditions, annotated with descriptions of the landscape.

Thomas L. Mitchell. Map of the South East portion of Australia, shewing the progress of discovery, in the Interior of New South Wales. London: J. Murray, 1837. 17 x 14 inches. Hand-colored in outline, depicting the southeastern coast of Australia. With inset map of the continent at the top left. The map shows several routes taken by Major Thomas Mitchell during his 1836 expedition to locate fertile farmlands for new settlements. It was the first properly surveyed map of the area and remained in use for many years.

Condition: Both maps evenly toned with light ink offset where folded; each with a few small separations at the folds, reinforced on the verso. Mitchell map with minor wear at the left edge.
