Description
A.R. Roessler. A. R. Roessler's Latest Map of the State of Texas Exhibiting Mineral and Agricultural Districts, Post Offices & Mailroutes, Railroads Projected and Finished, Timber, Prairie, Swamp Lands. New York: Ed. W. Welcke & Bro., 1874. Hand-colored folding pocket lithographed map, 44 1/2 x 39 3/4 inches. With inset map titled "Map Showing Agricultural Districts and Varieties of Soils in the State of Texas." Inscription on the verso reads, "#111 / Map of Texas in 1874, Presented by Dr. J. Meyenberg / La Grange, Tex." Folded into original 12mo dark green blindstamped cloth covers.Roessler's map divides Texas along its county lines, noting key cities like Austin. Completed and projected railroad lines are included as well as a detailed list of the soil and timber varieties found in each county. The inset depicts the state as divided by agricultural districts and soil varieties. For example, throughout much of south-central Texas, Roessler notes that the soil is "especially adapted for the raising of cattals [sic]" while much of the state's eastern lands possess "rich sandy soil healthy timbered and easy of cultivation."
A good portion of New Mexico is depicted. This map identifies county seats, towns, roads, streams, rivers, mountains, the location of Indian tribes in Indian Territory, and public lands, with remarks on topography, notes on treaty cessions, etc. Taliaferro writes, "Roessler's maps are the only printed maps that preserve the results of the Shumard survey, the state's first geological and agricultural survey."
Anton R. Roessler was a trained geologist. He worked on the Texas Geological Survey in the 1860s and was involved with the Texas Land and Immigration Co. of New York in the 1870s. In spite of the popularity of his maps, Roessler gained a reputation throughout his career as a "questionable figure in the field of American geology." He was accused of plagiarism, thievery, and failing to contribute any original conclusions of note to the field. Regardless, his maps are the best record of Texas' agricultural and mineral wealth in the late 19th century.
Condition: Map has been backed with archival tissue to repair separations and tears along creases. Lightly toned and stained along bottom margin. Spine expanded to accommodate new backing. Boards slightly worn with discoloration to the lower right corner of the back board.
