Leoncavallo, Ruggero. Photograph signed boldly ("R. Leoncavallo") with inscription and musical quotation, in French, (9.87 x 8 in.; 251 x 203 mm.), New York, 14 December 1906; marginal light browning of mat. A fine musical quotation from Pagliacci. Leoncavallo inscribes the mat of a brooding image of himself by E. Rossi of Genoa: To Mr. the Doctor Howard Whiteside fondly and with best wishes R. Leoncavallo New York 14-12-1906. The composer pens the opening two bars of his most famous aria "Ridi Pagliaccio!" at the right central portion of the mat. Pagliacci, the tragic story of a jealous husband in a commedia del'arte troupe, had its premiere in Milan in 1892 and was an instant success.
