Description
John F. Kennedy: 1960 Campaign Plane Gift to Dr. Janet Travell. Lucite paperweight, 2.25" diameter, 1" thick. The Caroline was the twin-engine Convair 240 which carried John F. Kennedy over 225,000 miles across the country, during his 1960 presidential campaign. Originally purchased by Joseph P. Kennedy in 1959, the plane was donated by the Kennedy family to the Smithsonian in a nostalgic ceremony on November 17, 1967, in which Robert F. Kennedy spoke on behalf of the family. A lucite paperweight was later given to family friends to note the occasion. Suspended within is a brass replica of the plane bearing the name "CAROLINE", along with the dates "JULY 1, 1959" (likely JFK's first flight) and "NOVEMBER 17, 1967" (the date of the ceremony). This particular memento was given to Dr. Janet G. Travell, M.D., personal physician to the president. Accompanied by the original card bearing the message, "The family of / President John F. Kennedy" and the original box, all within a mailing box addressed to Dr. Travell postmarked January 4, 1968, Washington, D.C. Mailing box very good condition.
