A fellow doctor consults with Freud before publishing his book about his dreams with interpretations based on Freud's dream theory. Freud writes in full: Deuticke is prepared to publish your book and will be in touch with you in the near future. Allow me to advise you not to insist too much on payment (at least not for the first printing). Also I feel that the use of a pseudonym would be preferable to publishing the book anonymously. Troubetzkoi wouldn't be at all bad [trou=hole, koi=coi(tus), if it weren't already a name. On the first reading I couldn't make much of your dreams. There is so little interpretation and they don't seem convincing. It was even my impression that you had grasped the correctness of my dream theory more intuitively than empirically. You're probably correct about the sexual interpretations but this is not apparent from the data. My impression was certainly even more deficient because there is so much about you which I don't know and haven't written down. Does "Dad" indicate your father and is your father a "physician"? I could ask all sorts of questions but I want to allow some time to lapse before reading the collection a second time. Two thoughts lurked in my mind as I read: that you are considering a trip to Vienna and that you're uncomfortable with my being a Jew. Hopefully it will turn out that one part of these dream thoughts and one only will prove to be prophetic. With the most devoted greetings, your, Dr. Freud An important letter by Freud in which he acts as an authority on dream interpretation. In 1900, Freud published the first of his findings on his independent studies of the subconscious, The Interpretation of Dreams. His work attracted the attention of those outside Vienna, and many other doctors consulted with Freud while taking up his cause. In 1908, the year following this letter, the first International Congress of Psychoanalysis met in Vienna.
