Description

Frederick Douglass Funeral March Sheet Music. 10.5" x 13.5" (sight). Chicago: S. Brainard's Sons Company, 1895. Composed by N. Clark Smithe. Frederick Douglass died of a heart attack at his home on Cedar Hill in Anacostia, Washington D.C. after attending a meeting of the National Council of Women. His funeral took place on February 25, 1895 at the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church and was attended by thousands of the most prominent members of both white and African-American Washingtonian society including Susan B. Anthony, Senator John Sherman, Supreme Court Associate Justice John Marshall Harlan, Blanche Kelso Bruce, John R. Lynch, and John Francis Cook Jr. Only a few of these sheet music are known to have survived. This is the first complete exemplar we have found. We could not locate any auction records for another one. It is matted and framed to the overall size of 19" x 22.25". Not examined outside of the frame.

Condition: Rubbed and lightly soiled with some minor edgewear.
