Description
William S. Sharpe Doctor's Ledgers. While it is unknown for certain who Dr. Sharpe is (his name is found scribbled very faintly on the front cover of one of the journals), it is presumed that he is the same William S. Sharpe (1817-1876) who practiced medicine in Sharpsburg, Kentucky, for thirty-three years, serving as a surgeon in the Federal Army (during the Civil War) for three years. Little else is known of the man other than several of his family members, including his father, grandfather, and at least one son were also physicians. The earlier of the two spans the years 1864 through 1871. Each entry contains the name of the patient; year, month and day of the visit; who was examined ("babe," "child," "lady," etc.); medicine prescribed; money owed; and money credited. At times the ailment is noted and ranges from small pox to gonorrhea. Patients are both white and black; black patients being noted as such with the inclusion of "Colrd" next to their name. Some are soldiers (presumably Union), such as "Capt. R. Davidson" who visited the good doctor between September 25 and 27, 1865, and Peter Allen, a black soldier who visited in the same year: "Aug 19 [1865] By Cash $3 in full as he is a Colord Soldier." Bound in heavily worn and soiled leather with four large, decorative bands on the spine. Several pages near the end have detached from the textblock. Foxing is scattered throughout.
The second, which spans the period 1871 through 1876 (with one final entry for 1878 on the last page), is more of an account ledger as there is no mention of ailments. "Patients" are indexed by name at the beginning. Entry details include the year; name of the patient; money owed; and money credited. The final thirty-five pages are blank. Bound in leather which is also heavily worn and soiled.
