Description
Western Hanging Postcards. One of the more curious customs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was the production of souvenir postcards of executions and other gruesome activities. A series of three tinted postcards here records the "Execution of Mexican Murderers [in] Prescott, Ariz. 1904". The first view shows the two condemned kneeling and saying their final prayers, accompanied by a priest. The second shows them being bound and prepared for execution, titled "Adios Amigos!" The third shows them after the trap door has been released. The cards are in mint condition and have not been mailed. The original owner has added commentary in pencil on the back side, including pithy remarks such as "No. 3 Is where the hereafter has got a hold on them."Auction Info
