W. Somerset Maugham. Two Autograph Quotations Signed and One Signed Program.

More Information:

This lot contains the following items:

Autograph quotation signed by Maugham: on printed note paper, with a London address, and dated February 21, 1908. Maugham has written: "I merely wanted to ask Ponsonby for more potatoes." Beneath the quote is Maugham's signature ("W. S. Maugham"). Center fold. Paperclip residue to top left; faint creases to three corners. Very good. The quote is from a passage in Maugham's novel The Bishop's Apron, in which Lord Spratte refers to Ponsonby, the butler. Perhaps a possible caption to an illustration in the Newnes illustrated edition which was to have been published at the end of 1908. [and:]

Autograph quotation signed by Maugham: on Villa Mauresque stationery, undated. Maugham has written: "Reading doesn't make a man wise; it only makes him learned." Beneath that he has signed his named ("W. Somerset Maugham") followed by a flourish. Center fold. A few light creases; tip of top left corner missing. Very good. [and:]

Arts Theatre Club program for the 1950 London revival of Maugham's play Home and Beauty (known in America as Too Many Husbands), which later toured the provinces and starred Hugh Burden and Brenda Bruce. Eight-page program measuring 4.75 x 6 inches. Signed by Maugham ("W. Somerset Maugham") at the top of the program. Fine.

From the Collection of Norman F. Moore.
