Description

Tombstone, Arizona: Important Josie Earp Letter to John Flood Regarding Wyatt, Doc Holliday, and William S. Hart. One page, front and back, 7.25" x 10.5", all in clear black ink and boldly signed. Excellent condition.

The 1927 letter, written two years before Wyatt Earp's death, addresses the concerns of Flood, who was working on his definitive Earp biography, about discussions between Wyatt and Josie and Walter Noble Burns. Burns was writing his own Earp biography, and Flood was concerned that Wyatt may have given Burns information which he could publish before Flood's own narrative appeared. Josie attempted to allay his fears by pointing out that Burns had claimed this was only for a story about Holliday, but as it turned out Flood was right: Burns did indeed publish what the Earps shared with him in his own book, Tombstone: An Iliad of the Southwest. A complete transcript of this significant letter may be found with our website presentation of the lot.
