Description

Rare "Saddle Blanket" Edition

Tom Lea. The King Ranch. Kingsville [Texas]: Printed for the King Ranch by Carl Hertzog, 1957. First edition of the so-called "King Ranch Saddle Blanket Edition," designed by Carl Hertzog and limited to 3000 specially bound copies. Two 8vo volumes, [10], 467; [10], [468]-838 pages. Illustrated with drawings by the author, some in color, maps, and facsimiles. Publisher's prospectus laid-in each volume. Original natural linen over boards with the King Ranch "Running W" brand and other decoration to simulate a saddle blanket. Mesquite-pattern endpapers. Fore-edge untrimmed; other edges speckled. A fine set complete with the publisher's slipcase and in the original cardboard shipping box.

Originally planned as a 250-350 page private edition to be published on the occasion of the King Ranch centennial in 1953, the project grew to an 838 page trade book. The physical dimensions of the book and the internal design with its ample page margins and expansive chapter head designs are reflective of the immense scale of the King Ranch. This edition was printed on all rag paper made especially for the book by the Curtis Paper Company. It is bound in heavy crash linen resembling the King Ranch saddle blanket with the running "W" brand. Hertzog's design was included in the American Institute of Graphic Arts Fifty Books of the Year.
