Description

Rio Grande and Texas Land Company Stock Certificate issued to Catharine L. Webb. One page, 9" x 5" x 7"; New York, 183[4]. Partly printed with an engraved map of the company's holdings in the top left corner. Certificate number 484, entitling the bearer to "one shares in the Estate and Funds of the Rio Grande and Texas Land Company, transferable only on the Books of the Company." Signed by John Charles Beales as Empresario and Isaac Johnson as Trustee.

Streeter lists this printing as 1153 in his bibliography and notes: "The
certificate of stock in my collection which is apparently dated July 11, 1844...
The date as late as 1844 in this certificate is puzzling. It is obviously of
later date than the scrip certificates of the two previous entries as Edwards is
no longer shown as Secretary." Streeter lists Lemuel Sawyer signing as
Secretary, but signature is illegible and cannot be verified. The certificate we
offer is undated, but likely dates to the same period as Streeter's listing.

Condition: Flattened folds, and uneven toning with a few stray spots of foxing and ink stains.
