Description

Possible Early Confederate 12-Star Transitional Flag. Intriguing 45" x 30" cotton flag with twelve "puffy" stars in the right-side canton. There are nineteen red & white printed stripes. It is entirely hand-stitched and pieced together using three sections (two for the stripes and one for the canton). It is finished at top & bottom and hemmed along the left edge (there may have been a hem or sleeve along the right side at one time but, if so, it unraveled). The stars show on either side of the canton through cut-out holes, as is typical for the period. There are some minor holes in the canton and two areas of loss to the right corners. There is a cord or twine loop still present in the upper right corner. The colors remain bold and there is light overall aging. It gives every indication of being of the period.
