Massive Benjamin Rumford Gold Prize Medal Awarded to George Russell Harrison.65 mm medal designed by Moritz Furst. The obverse depicts "Benjamin Count Rumford Born 1753 Died 1814". The reverse reads: "Rumford Medal For Discoveries in Light or Heat Awarded by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences To: George Russell Harrison For His Improvements In Spectroscopic Technique 1939". Although the endowment for the award was established in 1796 by Benjamin Thompson, "Count Rumford of the United Kingdom", it was meant to be awarded to Americans. The first award was not given until 1839. Recipients have included John Ericcson, Thomas Edison and Enrico Fermi. George Russell Harrison (1896-1979) was a professor at MIT and Dean of the Department of Science. He headed MIT's Spectroscopy Laboratory during WWII. The medal is in great condition and comes in its original fitted case. It tests between 18K and 22K and weighs 231.3 grams (approximately 8 ounces). Normal, light wear to case.
