Description

Martin Luther King, Jr., and Maude Ballou "Distinguished NAACP Volunteer" Cards with Letter. These cards were issued to recognize the "invaluable and distinguished service of a Volunteer Worker in the program of the Columbus Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and in such capacity did help advance the NAACP Program." One card was issued to Dr. King and the other to his friend and personal secretary, Mrs. Maude Ballou.

The transmittal letter, one typed page on NAACP letterhead, 8.5" x 11", Columbus [Ohio], July 9, 1957, addressed to Dr. King and Mrs. Ballou at The Montgomery Improvement Association, reads, in part: "Certainly, the fine co-operation we received from your office entitles us to say that you helped us to get MANY members in our drive this year; it gives me great pleasure to send you the enclosed cards. . . . Might I mention one more matter in this letter. We are announcing the January 14 engagement with Dr. King. As a result perhaps other groups might seek to engage him while here. Our plans are not complete but I am sure that we will want to schedule as much as is reasonable of Dr. King's time." Signed by Barbee William Durham, executive secretary of the Columbus chapter.

Both the cards and the letter are lightly toned, especially around the edges. The two cards also show small spots of foxing.
