Lincoln County War: John Chisum and the Cattle Business. Group of documents related to John Chisum and cattle brands. The Santa Fe Ring, led by Lawrence Murphy and James J. Dolan (a.k.a. "The House") was accused of rustling cattle from Chisum and his ally, John Tunstall. Tunstall's assassination prompted the Lincoln County War, leading to the hiring of Billy the Kid & the Regulators. 1) 8" x 10" document ("Bill of Sale"), Chisum's Ranch, September 12, 1884, signed by William Robert, acknowledging the receipt of $40 per head for 74 bull steers which were sold to the Anderson Cattle Company. The document is illustrated with two different brands used on the cattle (minor separation at folds). 2) 8 1/2" x 14" ledger page, Lincoln, New Mexico, April 2, 1883, registering a cattle brand for the Anderson Cattle Company. 3) a similar document to #2, registering a cattle brand & ear mark for the Anderson Cattle Company. 4) an 8" x 10" letter or extract from George D. Bowman to George B. Barber "Atty for Mr. Anderson in procuring title for Anderson to Government land in Lincoln County N.M." dealing with held funds and an unfair banking fee (what else is new?) 5) 4-page contract, written on two attached ledger sheets, dealing with the sale of three thousand head of grown cattle and thirty horses to William E. Anderson, November 20, 1882 (partial separation at top fold). The document is signed by the principals, including two witnesses (one is whom is George Barber, surveyor for John Chisum, lawyer and second husband of Susan McSween, the "Cattle Queen of New Mexico"). 6) December 29, 1883 TLS from attorney Curtis Burdett in Washington to George B. Barber in Lincoln, New Mexico regarding Barber's effort to obtain a patent [transfer of land] for property temporarily assigned to the Muscalero Apache Indians. On the verso, Barber pens a letter to William Anderson: "The information conveyed in this letter proves that we have headed the agency clique off & that you will receive your Patents for the land in due time..." An interesting peek into the politics and machinations of the early cattle business. We assume the "agency" refers to the New Mexico Indian Agency.Auction Info
