Description
John Brown Engraving by T.S. Noble.22" x 28"
New York; 1867
A black and white engraving by Thomas Satterwhite Noble, depicting John Brown blessing an African-American child as he is led to the gallows. Written in the margins is a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier that reads, "John Brown of Osawatomie They led him out to die, and lo! A poor slave-mother with her little child pressed nigh. Then the bold, blue eye grew tender and the old, harsh face grew mild As he stopped between the jeering ranks and blessed the negro's child."
In 1859, John Brown led a slave raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry. After his arrest, Brown became vilified in the South and gained martyrdom with anti-slavery supporters in the North. The artwork by Noble is of an apocryphal tale, and was published on the eighth anniversary of Brown's death. Interestingly, Noble himself was a Southerner and had served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
Condition: Soiling around the edges, with creasing and light chipping. There is some paper loss at the corners, else good.
